CELEBRATING THE CENTENARY OF THE END OF THE GREAT WAR

CELEBRATING THE CENTENARY ‘A Community Celebration of the Centenary of the End of World War 1’ and supporting the Royal British Legion, as the Leigh-on-Sea Branch launch their Annual Poppy Appeal at the Leigh Community Centre on Saturday October 27th 1000-1600 Leigh Town Council, in partnership with the Royal British Legion, the Leigh Society and Blade Education. Come and learn more about the amazing people who lived though the Great War from our town, enjoy free exhibitions and art installations by local artists and school children. Watch films about World War 1 made by West Leigh School children and special films about Veterans today. Guest speakers Cathryn Corns, author of the “The Lost Men of Eastwood” and Lizzie Page, author of the “The War Nurses” and Carole Mulroney on “Women in the Great War”. Leigh-on-Sea branch of the Royal British Legion will be holding their annual cake sale and tombola, with powerful motorbikes from the RBL Riders Branch outside and Blade Education will be inside making poppies in the main hall. Bob O’Leary, Secretary of the Leigh-on-Sea Branch of The Royal British Legion said, “In recent years we have enjoyed launching our Annual Poppy Appeal from the Community Centre – but the prospect of this year's enhanced event in conjunction with our friends from Leigh Town Council, The Leigh Society and Blade Education is very exciting”. Valerie Morgan, Leigh Town Council said, “Leigh Town Council is proud to be helping to mark this important date in our history.” Carole Mulroney, Leigh Society told us “It is so important that we remember all who took part in the Great War from whatever background or whatever service they gave. Those who died and those who returned never to be the same again must all be remembered as their sacrifices had such a profound effect on successive generations to this day. “
